Cardiff - Port Information

A great place for cruise excursions, day trips, and shore days.

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales with a population of 346,000. It was a Roman foundation, a strategic fort at the mouth of the river Taff which was later rebuilt as a Norman castle. It was transformed into a major industrial and administrative city by the industrial revolution which developed the town docks into the largest coal export centre in the world. These docks have now been regenerated into Cardiff Bay, a thriving waterside development with museums, cafes and shops, the Welsh "Parliament" and National Opera House. The new docks where your cruise ship will berth are just to the East of the old Cardiff Bay docks which are now protected from tidal movement by a barrage. The town of Cardiff itself, which is 3 miles from the port, has developed into a major retail centre and contains the Millennium Stadium and the National Museum. At its core is Cardiff Castle which was transformed in the 19th century into a lavish neo-gothic fantasy and a visit there is a unique experience.

Cruise ship visitors may wish to spend a complete day in Cardiff town and waterfront or they may wish to go further afield to visit some classic attractions nearby. St Fagan's National History Museum is one of Europe's leading open air museums and contains over 40 original buildings from different historical periods and all parts of Wales. Dyffryn Gardens lies in the Vale of Glamorgan and has spectacular parkland, lily ponds and themed yew hedge enclosures. Caerphilly Castle is one of the largest mediaeval fortresses in Europe. Castell Coch is a romantic fairy tale castle perched on a wooded hillside near Cardiff.
