Newport - Port Information

A great place for cruise excursions, day trips, and shore days.

Newport is 12 miles east of Cardiff. It is the third largest city in Wales with a population of 146,000. It has been a port since mediaeval times when a castle was built by the Normans. It grew considerably in the 19th century when its port became the focus of coal exports from the valleys of South Wales. It remains an active industrial port and manufacturing and engineering centre.

Some of the attractions nearby include an exploration of Wales' Roman past at the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon and Tredegar House, a magnificent late 17th century mansion. If you want to discover what life was like in the coal mines then go to the Big Pit Museum which features an underground tour by former miners. Or step back in time even further to 1645 at historic Llancaiach Fawr Manor. Or imagine what life was like in a Cistercian monastery by visiting Tintern Abbey, which so inspired Wordsworth.
